How to Install a Ceiling Fan

A new ceiling fan moves air, drops your cooling bill, and looks great. The trick is making sure the electrical box is rated for the weight and the wobble.

Safety firstA standard light-fixture box will not safely support a ceiling fan. If you're replacing a light, swap to a fan-rated box first.

What You'll Need

  • Ladder
  • Drill / driver
  • Screwdriver set
  • Wire nuts
  • Non-contact voltage tester
  • Fan-rated electrical box (if upgrading)

Step-by-Step

  1. Turn off the circuitCut the breaker, then test the existing fixture wires to confirm they're dead.
  2. Remove the old fixtureUnscrew the existing light, disconnect the wires, and check the box. Upgrade to a fan-rated box if needed.
  3. Mount the bracketAttach the fan's mounting bracket securely to the box with the screws provided.
  4. Hang the motorHook the motor onto the bracket so it dangles, freeing both hands for wiring.
  5. Connect the wiresBlack to black (fan), blue or black/white-stripe to black (light), white to white, and ground to ground. Cap each pair with a wire nut.
  6. Bolt the motor upLift the motor flush to the bracket and screw it into place. Tug each connection to make sure nothing pulls loose.
  7. Install blades and light kitAttach each blade to its bracket, then install the light kit and bulbs if your fan has one.
  8. Power on and testRestore power, run the fan on each speed, and watch for wobble. Use balancing weights if needed.
